Houston, Texas, received its name from Sam Houston, the man elected to be the state's first president in 1836. As cotton was a major industry in the area, Houston began to grow and prosper when the railroad arrived in the newly incorporated city, and it began to be the place from where cotton was shipped in large quantities. With the coming of the Civil War, Houston became the center where the generals organized the Battle of Galveston. After the war was over, it went back to being an industrial city devoted to the railroad and business ventures.

After the turn of the 20th century, Houston saw its fortunes rise even further when Texans discovered oil in the area. As was inclined to happen, this caused the population to surge significantly. Notably, a good portion of this population increase was due to African American migrants who came to be a full one third of the population around 1910.

With the rise and fall of oil prices, Houston's population did the same. In the 1970s, Houston's oil industry had the opportunity to contribute to the country's oil needs while the Arab Oil Embargo was taking place, and many people took advantage of the chance to obtain jobs in this sector. When oil prices took a dive, people began to leave, and Houston suffered a recession in the 1980s.

Currently, Houston is the place where the older forms of energy continue to be developed, including the oil and natural gas industries. Houston also has a stronghold in another major part of the oil industry because this city is a major manufacturer of the equipment needed in the oil fields. Houston is also a city where newer forms of technology are being explored, including wind and solar energy sources.

One of the more distinctive features in Houston is the Port of Houston. Currently, there are only three ports in the United States that are larger than this port, and it has been called the busiest port in the country by those who are counting foreign tonnage. It welcomes goods from all over the world, including from other parts of North America.

When visiting Houston, people will not necessarily have to worry that they will be caught in a tornado although there is a slight possibility. Arriving in the summer months will mean that they will enjoy temperatures in the 90s. If this is not to their liking, they can choose to visit during the winter where they will be treated to temperatures between the 40s and 60s.
